LONG-TERM FUNDING
Legacies – making the ask
Several people expressed reservations about asking
for legacies. It may seem insensitive to raise the subject.
However, in this as in so many other areas of fundraising
directly from the public, simply opening a channel for giving will often start
the ball rolling.
A simple paragraph in each newsletter, directing questions
to someone who has the knowledge and confidence to offer advice (even if that
advice is simply, “Would you like to talk to our solicitor?”) is a good start.
A basic leaflet offering advice on making a will is
also very useful, and will be seen by supporters as a useful service.
Specialist advice is readily available, but let’s
not over-complicate the issue : legacies can be promoted on large or small
scales, but can provide long-term independent funding for our organisations.
No strategy for sustainability is complete without some consideration for
this traditional from of fundraising.
